Second Life --
In Second Life I am Katie Fenstalker. (Pic left is of the Two Worlds Book party which took place simultaneously in Second Life and at the University of Maryland. It could not have happened without the help of Kate Miranda in SL and Jennifer Lyn Patterson at UMD.)
Two research projects have involved Second Life. • "Blogger Grrrling it in SL" describes my first experiences there. • "SL Tranimal" explores distributed embodiments and intra-object affections.
Second Life (SL) is an online virtual world on which much international scholarly activity takes place. • I have completed two Sloane professional development courses on teaching in SL, provided by UMD’s Office of IT. • I have been a convener of a feminist reading group in SL, which has included Canadian and US educators, as well as graduate students from UMD (Women’s Studies & American Studies) and from the University of California at Santa Cruz (History of Consciousness), and has been linked to a Facebook group of 64 international scholars in feminist technoscience. • I presented on Second Life professional activities to the OIT Brown Bag lunch discussion series on “Second Life in Education” on March 5, 2010 for the Office of Information Technology, University of Maryland, College Park. • I have offered five presentations in Second Life to mixed community groups there, and led many discussions on feminist topics.
